A fierce gun battle between Gulf Cartel members and the Mexican military left five gunmen dead near the Texas border city of Rio Bravo.
The shootout took place when a Mexican military convoy was conducting routine patrols near an intersection on the main highway connecting the city of Rio Bravo with the border city of Matamoros, information released by the Tamaulipas government revealed.
The military convoy spotted a maroon Chevrolet Suburban with five gunmen on board, who proceeded to fire on them, according to the government report.
The Mexican soldiers fought off the attack and killed the five gunmen, who were all armed with rifles. Inside the SUV, the troops found ammunition, magazines, and tactical gear.
As Breitbart Texas previously reported, the border area in Tamaulipas has been the stage of a fierce internal war between rival factions of the Gulf Cartel. The fighting has led to large scale gun battles, grenade attacks and road blockades along many highways, causing panic throughout the region.
