Black Lives Matter protesters in Minneapolis chanted “F**k the National Guard” after taking to the streets. Their march immediately followed the conviction by a Minnesota jury of former police officer Derek Chauvin for murdering George Floyd nearly one year ago.
The Minnesota National Guard said some of its members came under fire in northern Minneapolis on Sunday morning.
Reporters loudly objected to the use of the word “riot” by a Minnesota police chief after his officers were assaulted and injured by bricks, rocks, and frozen soda cans, he explained. The chief defended the term by describing the incidents encountered by officers at the station Sunday night.
The governor of Minnesota activated the state’s National Guard following the dismissal of one of three charges filed against a former police officer in the death of George Floyd. The judge dismissed a 3rd-degree murder charge while leaving the 2nd-degree murder and 2nd-degree manslaughter charges in place.

Members of an Army Immediate Response Force part of the 82nd Airborne Division have been told to be ready to respond to riots.
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — All three Minnesota National Guard soldiers were killed when the Black Hawk helicopter they were riding in crashed Thursday in central Minnesota, Gov. Tim Walz confirmed. The identities of the soldiers were not released, pending notification of family.
