Many people encourage college students to get jobs, in order to bring in extra money to help with expenses. Though, I’m not sure this kind of work is what most people have in mind.
Josh Gordon, the recently reinstated wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns, has spent the last couple years fighting to get back into the league after multiple drug-related suspensions. Now, in an interview with Sports Illustrated, Brown says that he earned upwards of $10,000 a month selling marijuana while at Baylor.
According to SI, “As a sophomore at Baylor he says he was receiving as much as six pounds of weed — vacuum-sealed and wrapped in Mylar, sprayed with kerosene and covered in coffee beans to mask the smell, shipped through U.S. mail — every week from a dealer back home. He would drive to Dallas, Austin and San Antonio to sell it, and he estimates he was bringing in upward of $10,000 in profit every month.”
SI explains, “Gordon’s history of drug and alcohol abuse is well-documented. He was suspended as a sophomore in 2010 when police found Gordon and a teammate in a car with marijuana inside. He was kicked off the team a year later when he tested positive for marijuana, despite claiming Baylor coaches enabled his behavior by helping him pass drug tests. He then transferred to Utah, where he sat out in 2011 before leaving for the NFL’s 2012 supplemental draft.”
Given all the news that’s come out about the crime and corruption associated with the Baylor program over the last year, Gordon’s claim that Baylor coached helped cover for his illegal activities, is quite believable.
Gordon also has no reason to lie about anything, he’s already been reinstated and he’ll play his first NFL game since Week 16 of the 2014 season this Sunday when the Browns take on the Chargers. A comeback that has become one of the real “feel good” stories of the year. Well, it feels as good as coming back to the Browns can possibly feel.
