WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says he saw people cheering the Sept. 11 attacks across the river in New Jersey — but there’s no evidence that ever happened.

Trump first said Saturday that he’d watched as thousands of people in Jersey City cheered as the twin towers came down.

He repeated that assertion on Sunday morning, claiming that he’d seen the scenes on television.

Footage of Muslims in Middle Eastern countries cheering news of the attacks were broadcast on television.

But there is no evidence of mass celebrations by Muslims in Jersey City, which sits right across the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop says Trump is “plain wrong” and politicizing an emotionally charged issue.
