March 3 (UPI) — Former President Barack Obama will receive the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation’s “Profile in Courage” award, the library announced.
Named for Kennedy’s 1957 Pulitzer Prize-winning book of short biographies describing acts of integrity by U.S. political leaders, the annual award cites Obama for his “enduring commitment to democratic ideals and elevating the standard of political courage in a new century.” It will be presented on May 7 at Boston’s John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. It is regarded as a centennial award by the library; Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917.
“Faced with unrelenting political opposition, President Obama has embodied the definition of courage that my grandfather cites in the opening lines of Profiles in Courage: grace under pressure,” said Kennedy’s grandson, Jack Schlossberg, in a statement Thursday. “Throughout his two terms in office, he represented all Americans with decency, integrity, and an unshakable commitment to the greater good.”
Schlossberg and his mother, former ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy, will make the presentation at a banquet.
