Sept. 3 (UPI) — Caylin Newton led Howard to a victory against UNLV on Saturday despite being a 45-point underdog.
Newton is a freshman quarterback for the Bison and the brother of Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.
The Bison win proved to be one of the biggest upsets in college football history.
If you had bet $100 on the Bison before the contest, you would have been rewarded with at least $55,000. Howard took home the 45-43 win at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. A $100 bet on the Bison could have rewarded you with as much as $71,500.
The Bison went 2-9 last season and 1-10 in 2015.
Newton completed 15-of-26 passes for 140 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the win. He is also explosive on the ground, like his older brother. The younger Newton piled up 190 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.
Howard actually faced a 12-point deficit with 6:45 left in the third quarter before the quarterback took over. Newton led the Bison on consecutive touchdown drives, before UNLV earned back a 40-36 advantage. Newton scored on a four-year rushing touchdown to put his team on top again with 7:34 remaining in the game. The Bison defense held the lead for the victory.
Newton opened up the game with a 52-yard touchdown dash. The quarterback is listed at 5-foot-11, 170 pounds. The Grady High School product was a three-star recruit, according to 247 Sports.
Howard battles Kent State at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at Dix Stadium in Kent, Ohio. The Bison were paid $600,000 to put UNLV on their schedule this season, according to USA Today.
