Elon Musk: Human drivers will be outlawed one day

SAN FRANCISCO, March 18 (UPI) — Tesla CEO Elon Musk believes as self-driving cars begin to populate the streets, people will eventually want to prohibit human drivers altogether.

“I don’t think we have to worry about autonomous cars, because that’s sort of like a narrow form of AI,” Musk told NVidia co-founder and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang at the company’s annual developers conference Monday. “It would be like an elevator. They used to have elevator operators, and then we developed some simple circuitry to have elevators just automatically come to the floor that you’re at … the car is going to be just like that. As for human drivers, he thinks they will be banished from the wheel in the interest of public safety.

“It’s too dangerous,” Musk said. “You can’t have a person driving a two-ton death machine.”

He later clarified that he does not wish for this to happen. It’s bad for business.

To be clear, Tesla is strongly in favor of people being allowed to drive their cars and always will be. Hopefully, that is obvious.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 17, 2015

However, when self-driving cars become safer than human-driven cars, the public may outlaw the latter. Hopefully not.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 17, 2015
