WASHINGTON, May 25 (UPI) — Sen. Elizabeth Warren let fly with a seething attack on presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, calling him a “small, insecure money-grubber” for comments he made in 2006 about benefiting from a housing market crash.
Warren, D-Mass., made the comments about Trump in a speech at the annual gala of the Center for Popular Democracy on Tuesday.
In the 2006 interview, Trump said he would welcome a housing market crash — which materialized two years later, triggering the Great Recession — because he’d made more money as an investor in bad markets than good.
“Donald Trump was drooling over the idea of a housing meltdown because it meant he could buy up a bunch more property on the cheap,” Warren said. “What kind of a man does that? What kind of a man roots for people to get thrown out of their house? What kind of a man roots for people to get thrown out of their jobs? … I’ll tell you exactly what kind of a man does that. It is a man who cares about no one but himself. A small, insecure money-grubber who doesn’t care who gets hurt so long as he makes a profit off it. What kind of a man does that? A man who will never be president of the United States.”
Trump shot back at Warren on Twitter, renewing his preferred epithet for the Massachusetts senator: “goofy.”
“Goofy Senator Elizabeth Warren has done less in the U.S. Senate than practically any other senator. All talk, no action!” Trump tweeted Wednesday morning.
Trump also mockingly called Warren “Pocahontas” during a speech Tuesday night in Albuquerque, N.M. The jab is a reference to allegations that dogged Warren during her successful Senate campaign, when she was accused of benefiting in her academic career as a result of claiming Native American ancestry despite the lack of genealogical or historical evidence.
The two have taken to Twitter before to express their dislike for one another. They engaged in a protracted Twitter feud two weeks ago, when Trump first began calling her “goofy.”
Warren also hit Trump over his refusal thus far to release his tax returns, suggesting he is not as wealthy as he says he is.
“Maybe he is just a lousy businessman and he just doesn’t want everyone to know that he’s not as rich as he claims to be,” Warren said.
Trump has said his tax returns are being audited by the IRS, which is preventing him from making them public. He has also said it’s “nobody’s business” how much he’s paying in taxes.
Every presidential candidate since 1976 has released some portion of their taxes for public scrutiny.
