BMX legend Dave Mirra dead at 41

GREENVILLE, N.C., Feb. 5 (UPI) — Dave Mirra, a 14-time gold medal winning BMX athlete, was found dead Thursday.

The 41-year-old was found Thursday, with an “apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head,” according to TMZ Sports. He was found inside a truck in Greenville, North Carolina.

Mirra was married and has two children, Madison and Mackenzie. Police are investigating the death.

On Thursday, Mirra also posted a photo to his Instagram account. The caption on the photo reads: “My Rock! Thank god.”

“Dave Mirra, your courage, determination and natural skill in everything you pursued pushed the world of action sports to become a better place. From all of us at X Games and ESPN, we salute your contributions,” a statement from ESPN said. “Our sincere condolences go out to Dave’s wife, Lauren, his daughters Mackenzie and Madison, the BMX community and friends of Dave Mirra.”

“Goodbye Dave Mirra, a true pioneer, icon and legend,” Tony Hawk tweeted. “Thank you for the memories… we are heartbroken.”
