A petition calling on the government to halt all immigration to the UK “immediately” has raced past the 100,000 signature mark, meaning that it is now eligible for debate in the House of Commons. However, it is unlikely to be put to the Commons, as MPs are currently debating the migrant crisis in Europe.

The petition calls on the government to “close all borders, and prevent more immigrants from entering Britain,” citing concerns over the amount of money spent on benefits for migrants, and the disrespect shown by some migrants to Britain’s heritage.

It counters a petition calling for Britain to take more refugees, which quickly reached more than 100,000 signatures, piling pressure on Prime Minister David Cameron. On Friday, Cameron caved to that pressure and announced plans for Britain to take in 20,000 Syrians.

But since that announcement, the petition opposing immigration has surged, gaining 20,000 signatures a day. Displaying close to 45,000 signatures when Breitbart London first reported on it three days ago, it now numbers more than 107,000 signatures at time of writing.

According to the government’s petitions website, “petitions which reach 100,000 signatures are almost always debated. But we may decide not to put a petition forward for debate if the issue has already been debated recently or there’s a debate scheduled for the near future.” MPs will be gathering today to discuss the ongoing migrant crisis in Europe, and may use that as an excuse to ignore the petition.

Forty local councils have already started making announcements on their willingness to home Syrian refugees, provoking anger among those on the waiting list who have been passed over.
