The new California law AB 60, an attempt to license the roughly 1.5 million illegal aliens in the state, has already licensed 110,000 immigrants since going into effect in January.
When a similar attempt was initially made in Nevada, the illegal residents failed the test 90% of the time. The ACLU attests that the failure rate can be due to the language barrier; Gloria Cruz of the San Diego ACLU told ABC 10 News that the need to apply online or with the DMV’s touchscreen had left immigrants with great difficulties to overcome. California applicants have faced similar difficulties with the written test
Because AB 60 licenses have “Federal Limits Apply” on the upper right corner, some immigrants are apparently worried that TSA or ICE agents could find them and deport them. the San Diego ACLU confirms that if illegal immigrants apply to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the agency could share their information with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
236,000 immigrants applied for the licenses in January. Applicants do not need a social security number or proof of legal presence to apply.
The ACLU of Northern California warns applicants:
Do not attempt to use your AB 60 license to enter restricted areas of federal facilities, pass through TSA screening, or verify your identity to federal law enforcement officers, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP). When talking to or in front of law enforcement, anything you say can be used against you – don’t talk about your immigration status, citizenship, or when you came to the US, or where you’re from.
