Azusa Pacific University, an evangelical Christian university near Los Angeles, has disinvited American Enterprise Institute scholar Charles Murray from a forthcoming appearance, saying that it needed more time to ascertain whether, according to Murray, his visit would involve “hurting our faculty and students of color.”
National Review Online notes that Murray has published an open letter in response, challenging Azusa students to think for themselves: “Azusa Pacific’s administration wants to protect you from earnest and nerdy old guys who have opinions that some of your faculty do not share. Ask if this is why you’re getting a college education.”
Murray courted controversy two decades ago with the publication of The Bell Curve, with campus activists protesting his appearances, charging that his data on IQ among racial groups was racist. Since then Murray has continued to publish and write, most recently on American social change.
