'Fab Being Fab': Celtics Call Up Fab Melo After He Walks into Door

An an athlete, performer, an aspiring businessman, or in virtually any profession, you work hard and wait for the proverbial door to open so you can walk through it toward success.

Fab Melo found a new way to join the roster of the most storied franchise in professional basketball history – he literally walked into the door.

Melo, who was playing in the D-League with the Maine Red Claws, got called up to prime-time and the Boston Celtics NBA roster because, as he admitted, he ran into a door at a hotel room. In order for him to be treated by the Celtics training staff and use their medical facilities, he had to be on their roster.

Presto! Chango! Melo is a Celtic. Of course, he was taken by the Celtics as the 22nd player in the draft out of Syracuse, but his ascendancy has been swifter than expected. Melo had figured this out before; he was called up last month because he had a leg injury.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers laughed:

“What did you have, ‘Manny being Manny?’ Well, in five years when Fab’s playing terrific for us here, we’re going to have some ‘Fab being Fab’ moments.”

You have to wonder what the fiercest Celtic of them all, Bill Russell, thinks of these shenanigans.
