CNN is reporting that as soon as today, Thursday afternoon, NBC News will announce that David Gregory is out as host of “Meet the Press” and Chuck Todd will be his replacement. Gregory is apparently already gone and will not even host the show this coming Sunday.
Rumors about the switch have been ongoing all year. “Meet the Press” has been in third place for over a year and Gregory seemed incapable of righting the ship. Until this week, NBC News always pushed back hard against these rumors with firm denials.
Todd and Gregory have both been conspicuously invisible all week. Gregory hasn’t tweeted for three days. Todd’s tweeted a few times but guest hosts have been filling in all week on his daily MSNBC show, “The Daily Rundown.”
It makes sense that NBC would announce on a Thursday. Gregory usually appears every Friday morning on “Morning Joe” to preview that coming Sunday’s “Meet the Press.” If he didn’t appear, the speculation would explode.
The author of the CNN report, Brian Stelter, does seem less sure of his report on Twitter:
