During a press conference after the attack on GOP House and Senate baseball players, Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX 6) said the heroes of the day were “the police officers who attacked the shooter.”

Barton is the manager of the Congressional baseball team. He was at the event when 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson allegedly opened fire on House and Senate members who were taking part in the game.

Breitbart News reported that five were injured, including Representative Steve Scalise (R-LA-1).

Speaking live on CNN, Barton said, “Our prayers are right now for Steve Scalise and his family, the others–the Capitol Hill Police who got wounded, and our volunteers who got wounded also. The heroes the police officers who attacked the shooter. And in doing so quite probably saved many, many, lives.”

Barton went on to describe the baseball game a “charity” which has been a tradition for “over 100 years.”

Later in the interview, Barton choked up a bit while thinking about the events of the day, then said, “Our prayers are to the people who were wounded and our thanks are to the police officers–including the Alexandria Police–who arrived very quickly, and who attacked–and I can’t emphasize this enough–they attacked the shooter, and that saved our lives.”
