Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is praising President-elect Donald Trump for selecting ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as his choice for Secretary of State.
“Rex Tillerson is an excellent choice for Secretary of State,” Rice said in a statement sent to reporters. “He will bring to the post remarkable and broad international experience; a deep understanding of the global economy and a belief in America’s special role in the world.”
Rice hailed Tillerson as a “successful businessman” and a “patriot” that would represent the values of the United States around the world.
“I look forward to supporting Rex through the confirmation process and then welcoming him to the family of Secretaries of State,” she said.
Rice runs a consulting firm with former CIA director and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, and represents ExxonMobil.
Gates also signaled his support for Trump’s choice in a statement.
“He would bring to the position vast knowledge, experience and success in dealing with dozens of governments and leaders in every corner of the world,” Gates said. “He is a person of great integrity whose only goal in office would be to protect and advance the interests of the United States.”
Gates and Tillerson met through their work together for the Boy Scouts of America over the years.
“I know this Eagle Scout will be a global champion of the best values of our country,” Gates said.
