Senator Tim Kaine: We Need to Limit ‘Ammunition Clips’

During the June 26 broadcast of Meet the Press, Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) said the U.S. needs to put stricter limits on the capacity of “ammunition clips.”

He also said he voted for an “assault weapons” ban before and “would likely vote for it again.”

Host Chuck Todd initiated the focus on gun control by asking, “Are you in favor of an assault weapons ban?” Kaine responded, “I have voted for it, but I think there’s a better way to go at the problem–and that is limitations on the size of magazines and ammunition clips.”

Todd quickly interjected, “Do you think an AR-15 should be sold?” And Kaine said:

Here’s the thing, I have voted for [the assault weapons ban], and I would likely vote for it again, but here’s the practical problem I think you’re aware of. As soon as you define what an assault weapon is–that you can’t sell a weapon and here’s how to describe it–gun manufacturers just make one adjustment or two and they say, “See, this isn’t subject to the limitation.”

Kaine said the way to undercut manufacturers’ ability to skirt bans is to say, “You can’t sell an ammunition clip or a magazine that would have more than 10 or 12 rounds, that is a very strict [ban].”

On June 13–the day after the Orlando terror attack–President Obama similarly said Omar Mateen had a “Glock which had a lot of clips in it.”
