Governor Martin O’Malley called Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump an “immigrant-bashing carnival barker” and said that America’s “symbol is the Statue of Liberty” and “not a barbed wire fence.”
O’Malley took a shot at the Republican presidential candidates, specifically Donald Trump, and discussed immigration during the second Democratic presidential candidate.
“The fact of the matter is, and let’s say it in our debate because you’ll never hear this from that immigration-bashing carnival barker Donald Trump— the truth.”
“The truth of the matter is net immigration from Mexico last year was zero–fact check me” he said. “Go ahead, check it out.”
O’Malley argued that if people want wages to go up in America, then Americans need to consider amnesty for the millions of illegal immigrants that reside in the country.
“But the truth of the matter is, if we want wages to go up, we’ve got to get 11 million of our neighbors off the shadow economy and into the full light of an American economy,” he said. “That’s what our parents and grandparents always did. That’s what we need to do as a nation.”
“Yes, we must protect our borders, but there is no substitute for having comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship for 11 million people, many of whom have known no other country but the United States of America,” O’Malley added.
“Our symbol is the Statue of Liberty” he said. “It is not a barbed wire fence.”
