During the October 1 attack that left 10 dead at Umpque Community College, Army veteran Christ Mintz blocked the door to a classroom with his body, then lay on the floor saying, “It’s my son’s birthday today.”

NBC News reports that Mintz served “about 10 years” in the Army and did some cage fighting prior to that. He suffered gunshots to “the back, abdomen and hands,” and both legs were broken.

According to Business Insider, Mintz charged the gunman, placing his body against the classroom door as the gunman sought entry. He was shot several times through the door and, once the gunman came in, Mintz looked up at him and said, “It’s my son’s birthday today.”

Mintz’s legs are so badly damaged that reports indicate he will “most likely have to relearn how to walk.”

Q13 Fox reports that his aunt, Wanda Mintz, said, “He could have very easily died. I really think that if he wasn’t such a strong, young guy, he may have.”

Reflecting on what her nephew did, Wanda added, “Tries to block the door to keep the gunman from coming in gets shot three times hits the floor looks up at gunman and says its my son’s birthday today gets shot two more times.”
