By the early response, the best mobile “phablet” phone of CES 2015 is the beautifully updated LG G Flex 2. The LG G Flex last year was big and featured a curved display technology with a somewhat dim screen. However, this year’s update fits in the hand better and uses its curve to dramatically improve screen appeal and phone durability.
The 2015 G Flex 2’s screen is downsized from a dim 6-inch 720p panel to a radiantly clear 5.5-inch size with a 1080p Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) screen. According to a glowing review by PC Magazine, Dr. Ramchan Woo, head of LG smartphone planning, said that LG display’s screen technology had “significantly advanced in the past year, making it possible to create denser, brighter OLEDs with a 20 percent tougher Gorilla Glass covering.”
The phone’s so-called “self-healing” plastic back has also been improved, Dr. Woo said, speeding up its scratch removal time from 3 minutes to a mere 10 seconds. LG can also now produce self-healing plastics in various colors, initially launching the phone in gray and a deep red.
With a slightly more compact size and radiant screen, the phone literally snaps into focus. LG has been making bezel-less devices for three years and its G Flex 2 is 5.87 by 2.96 inches. Although PC Magazine highlighted that the G Flex 2 is noticeably narrower than the iPhone 6 Plus, which features the same size and resolution screen. Its curved and tapered frame allows for the maximum screen size and easier to hold.
LG achieves this efficiency by moving the control and volume buttons to the phablet’s rear. The phone wakes up by tapping the screen with pattern LG calls a “knock code.” The phone also features a “Glimpse” that allows the user to view the time, date, and status bar while keeping the phone locked for battery maximization.
The G Flex 2 runs on Android Lollipop but with lots of upgraded software extensions. The phone offers two distinct types of multitasking, including split-screen and mini-window. The icons and fonts are customizable with LG’s media players and camera.
The phablets operates on one of the first 2 gigahertz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processors for super-smooth navigation. The phone comes standard with 32 GB of storage, expandable by another 23 GB in a MicroSD card slot. The battery is a beefy 3000mAh battery with LG’s proprietary quick-charging technology. The phablet has a main 13-megapixel laser autofocused camera and a 2.1-megapixel selfie front camera.
G Flex 2 does not suffer from the iPhone 6 permanent bending from a rear pocket, disparagingly referred to as “Bendgate.” LG claims the G Flex 2 truly “flexes, but it isn’t flexible.” If you sit or step on the G Flex 2, it’ll flatten out and snap back.
For a first day CES 2015 surprise cool factor, LG has scored with the G Flex 2.
