'Sleazy' GOP Establishment Targets Mark Levin

The communications director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) tried to smear conservative talk radio host Mark Levin Thursday by alleging that outside groups spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to make his book a best-seller, which they did not. Levin responded by saying he would hold Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and NRSC Chairman Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) personally responsible for the “intimidation tactics.”

As Breitbart News has documented, there has been plenty of bad blood between the NRSC and McConnell and the Senate Conservatives Fund, which backs conservative candidates who do not want to get co-opted by the Republican establishment.

Brad Dayspring, the communications director Levin described as an “idiot” and NRSC “hit man,” had earlier tweeted, “Fishy: Senate Conservatives Fund spent hundreds of thousands of donor dollars to make Mark Levin’s book a bestseller.” Dayspring’s assertion was completely false because he was referring to a paperback version of a book, published five years ago, that the Senate Conservatives Fund was merely offering to the group’s donors.

As Levin noted in a Facebook post in response to Dayspring’s smears, Liberty and Tyranny “is nearly 5 years old, sold nearly 1.3 million copies, and was on the New York Times best-seller list for half a year during 2009,” and “the Senate Conservative Fund (SCF) has been using the paperback version of the book in recent months to encourage donations in support of conservative candidates.”

As Breitbart News has reported, Liberty and Tyranny sold over a million copies without any reviews in the mainstream press and is largely regarded as a layout of Tea Party principles before the Tea Party even existed. Sales of the book reflected the power of the conservative grassroots that the Washington establishment loathes. The book, published in 2009, predicted many of the statist policies that President Barack Obama’s administration would advance and proved largely prophetic. It became a best-seller without the help of organizations that did not even exist then.

“This has nothing to do with best-seller lists that date back to 2009. I am told that the number of books distributed by the SCF represents about 3 percent of the total,” Levin wrote. “In addition, the SCF worked directly with the publisher, not me, in making these arrangements, and SCF apparently received a deep discount because of the bulk purchase of the paperbacks as would others who use the book for promotion purposes. I am told this is typical.”

Levin said he held “McConnell and the chairman of the NRSC –  Jerry Moran of Kansas – personally and politically accountable for the sleazy intimidation tactics of their current and former staffers.”

“Mitch McConnell’s National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) hit man, some idiot named Brad Dayspring, does not intimidate me and will not silence me with his sleazy inside-the-beltway tactics,” Levin wrote. “In fact, I am more fired up than ever.”

Levin vowed to address the topic on his radio show and implied the Republican establishment is coming after him because he opposes their statist candidates in favor of conservatives who will go to Washington and advance the cause of limited government, conservatives like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).

“My opposition to McConnell’s re-election is underscored by pathetic behavior like this,” he continued. “Conservatives should not give a dime to the NRSC, money which is used to pay the salaries of these hit men and empower McConnell, et al.”
