As predicted, President Barack Obama is making climate change the central focus of his visit with farmers today in the drought-stricken Central Valley of California. Rather than address the central grievance farmers have with the federal government, which is that fish are being prioritized over farmers in water allocations, Obama is announcing a new $1 billion “climate resilience fund” that will not address the urgent needs of the region. Presumably he expects the farmers to be grateful wards of the state rather than working the land for themselves.
Furthermore, it is worth noting that even the liberals who run the editorial page at the Washington Post have declared that the California drought has nothing to do with climate change. In an editorial slamming House Republicans for passing a bill that would put farmers first in line for water, the Post commended the White House for not trying to blame climate change for a drought that is a result of weather patterns that, while severe, are part of an historical pattern. It turns out that science is of little interest to the Obama administration.
