Thank God for small favors – Colorado Republicans have introduced a bill that if passed, would prevent food stamp recipients from withdrawing EBT cash inside pot dispensaries.
Food stamps for a pot brownie? Colorado lawmakers want to make sure that doesn’t happen.A bill proposed by several Republicans would add marijuana dispensaries to liquor stores, gun shops and casinos as places where recipients of public assistance payments and food stamps can’t use their electronic benefits cards to access cash.
Although there haven’t been any reports of public EBT card use at marijuana dispensaries as of yet, lawmakers say the pot shops should be added to the law to just to make clear that it’s not legal.
There is nothing, however, to prevent EBT card recipients from taking cash out elsewhere and using it to buy pot.
I would propose doing away with the cards themselves and going back to the old method of issuing paper food stamps that are only used for specified food items like milk, cheese and cereal – but the trend has been to make it easier for people to use their foodstamps on an ever expanding menu, including on what most people consider luxuries.
