Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas called the story that his teammates consider quarterback Russell Wilson not authentically black “an insult to our race.”
“Russell is the ultimate competitor,” Thomas told Peter King’s MMQB. “He always works as hard as anyone, and he handles himself with poise. He represents our team and our organization very well. I don’t think there’s any problem with him in our locker room at all.”
“We laughed at” the story, fellow Legion of Boom member Richard Sherman said. “We joked with him and asked if we need to put more chocolate syrup in his drinks. It has no bearing on what we do in this locker room. Nobody feels he isn’t ‘black enough.'”
The initial Bleacher Report story portrayed a locker room in turmoil, a description not hard to believe with running back Marshawn Lynch poised to leave Seattle through free agency after the season or through a trade during it and with Percy Harvin shipped to the New York Jets after engaging in verbal and physical fights with teammates. Part of the problem, teammates allegedly told writer Mike Freeman, involved the charismatic and articulate Russell Wilson, a quarterback they described as not meshing with a locker room of fellow African Americans.
The defending Super Bowl champions rose above .500 with a win over Carolina on Saturday after dropping two straight.
