Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) believes the Washington Redskins should “probably change” their name.
On the Dan Patrick Show on Friday, McCain said that if Native Americans think the Redskins name is “that offensive and terrible,” then it may have to be changed.
I’m not the owner and he has the rights of an owner. But frankly I would probably change the name,” McCain said, according to CBS Sports. “Myself I’m not offended. You’re not offended. But there are Native Americans who are.”
McCain urged Redskins owner Daniel Snyder to have a “dialogue” with Native American groups.
After the NBA suspended Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life for racist comments made on a private audio recording, the Oneida Nation called on NFL owners to punish Snyder while Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) also called on the Redskins to change their name. Reid said he believed there will be a name change in the next three years.
