Former Guantanamo Detainee Arrested in UK on Suspicion of Syria-Related Terrorism

Moazzam Begg, a former detainee in Guantanamo Bay, who now lives in Birmingham, UK, has been arrested by British police on suspicion of Syria-related terrorism offences.

Begg was arrested this morning, along with two men and a woman in the West Midlands, on suspicion of attending a terrorist training camp and facilitating terrorism overseas.

The others arrested are a man aged 36, from the town of Shirley, a woman aged 44 from Sparkhill, Birmingham, and her 20-year-old son.

All four are currently being held at a police station in the West Midlands.

Moazzam Begg was held in Guantanamo Bay for three years after being arrested in Pakistan in 2002, suspected of being a member of Al Qaeda. He was released in January 2005 without charge.

Last year, Britain’s Home Office confiscated Begg’s passport after a visit to Syria. He was told it was “not in the public interest” for him to travel.
