On July 14, the body of Benghazi terrorist attack suspect Faraj al-Shibli was discovered in Marj, Libya.
According to CNN, al-Shibli “was a member of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group.” That group “tried to overthrow the government of late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in the mid-1990s.”
In March 2013, al-Shibli was interrogated by Libyan officials regarding the Benghazi attack. The FBI also interviewed him, and “investigators learned that al-Shibli had contact with [Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula] as well as al Qaeda members in Pakistan.”
Members of AQAP took part in the Benghazi attack, but it is not known whether al-Shibli was at the U.S. consulate on the night of the attack.
Al-Shibli had been detained by local authorities two days prior to being found dead, but it is not known “when or why he was released from government detention.”
