A respected professor of economics at Sussex University in England has severed ties with the upcoming United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, claiming that his colleagues are “alarmist” about the threat of climate change.
According to Richard Tol, the summary of findings by scientists from 100 countries intentionally plays down the economic benefits of low level warming. Tol asserts that warmer winters would result in fewer deaths among the elderly and would increase crop production in some regions. The professor refutes the UN report, which claims that food prices will rise up to 84% by 2050 due to the effects of global warming.
Tol asserts that the authors of the new report are biased in their analysis. “It is pretty damn obvious that there are positive impacts of climate change, even though we are not always allowed to talk about them,” he said.
Furthermore, he states the UN academics are exaggerating climate change and comparing it to the “apocalypse.” Leaked drafts of the IPCC report claim that by the end of the century, global warming will displace hundreds of millions of people, forcing them into extreme and violent conflict while enduring catastrophic flooding.
The IPCC has been embarrassed in the past for making hyperbolic claims, and their reports have been plagued with errors which have undermined their credibility. In 2007, the panel had to withdraw its claim that glaciers in the Himalayas might disappear by 2035.
Tol is not the only public figure disenchanted with global warming enthusiasts. Last month, Greenpeace founder Patrick Moore told a Senate environmental committee, “There is no scientific proof that human emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) are the dominant cause of the minor warming of the Earth’s atmosphere over the past 100 years.”
