On her MSNBC show Sunday morning, Melissa Harris-Perry called attention to recently passed abortion regulations in Texas with a pair of tampon earrings.
During a second special session of the Texas legislature — after a successful filibuster by state Sen. Wendy Davis blocked the bill in the first — security cracked down on demonstrators, banning tampons and maxi-pads from the rotunda for fear that the feminine products would be thrown at lawmakers passing the controversial bill.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) inspected all bags and reportedly confiscated all paper goods including magazines and receipts, and glitter and confetti in addition to the feminine hygiene products.
There was immediate backlash on Twitter, referring to the confiscations as “Tampongate.”
