In the first interview with Democratic Party mega-donor Dr. Salomon Melgen since the scandal between him and New Jersey Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez broke out in early November 2012, Bloomberg News failed to make any mention of how Harvard and Yale deny any connection to the ophthalmologist.
While not the major focal point of the scandal, Melgen’s claimed but unverified ties to Harvard and Yale are relevant enough for this article, because reporter David Voreacos does include Melgen’s history at another medical school.
“Melgen began a career in medicine in the Dominican Republic before arriving in Miami in 1979, speaking little English,” Voreacos wrote. “He trained in ophthalmology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine from 1981 to 1984, eventually setting up a practice in West Palm Beach in 1988, according to his resume.”
As Lachlan Markay at the Washington Free Beacon found almost two months ago, though, Melgen’s resume touts experience gained at Harvard and Yale in addition to the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Only the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine has any record of Melgen, according to the Free Beacon report.
On February 5, Markay wrote that “Harvard’s personnel office has no record of anyone with the last name Melgen ever attending the medical school.”
“The personnel office’s digital library contains records dating back to 1980,” Markay added. “Melgen’s biography says he was at Harvard from 1984 through 1986. The Harvard employee said it was possible but ‘highly unlikely’ that Melgen’s name would not have been entered into the school’s records. The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, where Melgen claims to have performed his Harvard fellowship, said they could not verify personal information without written authorization.”
As for Yale, Markay notes that “Melgen’s biography claims he performed an internship at Danbury Hospital through Yale University.”
Like Harvard, Yale said they had no record of Melgen ever having attended.
“A spokesperson with the university’s staff office confirmed that they do keep records of all internships, but ‘we don’t have any record of [Melgen] doing anything here,'” Markay wrote.
Bloomberg’s Voreacos did not include that information in the story, even though he referenced Melgen’s résumé in the piece. Voreacus did not respond for comment when Breitbart News inquired whether he asked Melgen about the discrepancies with Harvard and Yale when he interviewed the Democratic Party mega-donor.
