While the media literally chose to politicize the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting within seconds of the news breaking, the National Rifle Association has shown extraordinary class in staying above the fray. The pro-gun rights group has remained silent throughout, even as media trolls, like Ben Smith’s childish gang of BenSmithers at BuzzFeed, mocked and attempted to bait them for daring to not ape the media and politicize this awful event.
Today, the NRA released a statement announcing a press conference on Friday, which will mark a full week after the shooting:
National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown.
Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting.
The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.
The NRA is planning to hold a major news conference in the Washington, DC area on Friday, December 21.
Waiting to make a statement was both the humane thing for the NRA to do and the smart thing tactically. By waiting until today, the NRA now knows what the media’s tactics are; and by waiting a few days after making this announcement to hold the actual presser, they will have an idea of how our unbiased, objective, open-minded, impartial, non-ideological media intends to absolutely crush and destroy them.
What the NRA now has is the time needed to formulate arguments and to put forward that which our craven, opportunistic media has not — a serious, pro-active plan to ensure Sandy Hook can’t happen again.
As much as they might try to delude themselves, it’s just a fact that nothing the media’s suggesting does anything to prevent another mass shooting. Columbine happened in the heart of Clinton’s assault weapons ban. If we truly want to stop these mass shootings, no amount of feel-good control gun control will do that.
Something the NRA needs to be especially prepared for, though, is a media determined not to let them do anything right. Already the stories are being written declaring Friday’s press conference a disaster, in poor taste, and a “setback for gun advocates.”
There’s no way in hell the anti-science media’s going to allow anything to get in the way of their gun-grabbing crusade, and as we’ve already seen, that includes facts, history, logic, decency, data, and reality.
Look at what’s happened to the NRA already. They’ve been mocked and taunted by the media for not speaking out. But you know if they already had, they would’ve been pilloried with “too soon.”
Remember, this is the same media that blamed the Gabby Giffords shooting on Sarah Palin. These people are merciless when they’re in a frenzy over the smell of blood in the water.
