The executives at America’s major news networks are always willing to throw someone else under the bus. Despite the fact that ABC News star and former Clinton official George Stephanopoulos greenlit the Brian Ross segment in which Ross explained that the Colorado movie shooter might be a Tea Partier, Stephanopoulos won’t go under the bus – it’ll be Ross. Said ABC News president Ben Sherwood today, according to Politico, “last Friday’s incorrect report by Brian Ross detracts from the network’s otherwise excellent coverage of the Colorado theater shooting.”
But this is far from the network’s only problem. Today, mother of the shooter Arlene Holmes explained that the network’s reporting that she said her son was the shooter was actually taken out of context. The rush for a scoop – and the rush to smear the Tea Party – is a hallmark of the mainstream media. And until ABC News roots out that eagerness to project a narrative rather than reporting the news, these sorts of humiliating episodes will continue.
