The United States Navy has joined the growing list of organizations looking to cut ties with Bill Cosby.
In light of sexual assault allegations and a recent civil suit, the legendary comedian has again found himself distanced from a lifelong ally, looking to save face.
On Thursday, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Mike Stevens announced in a press release that Cosby is now being stripped of his title as honorary Chief Petty Officer, which he was awarded in 2011.
“The Navy is taking this action because allegations against Mr. Cosby are very serious and are in conflict with the Navy’s core values of honor, courage and commitment,” reads the statement, via Navy Times.
Cosby enlisted in the U.S. military in 1956 and served as a hospital corpsman for four years.
Throughout his service, the comedian worked in naval hospitals, where he helped U.S. Marines recover from injuries sustained during the Korean War.
Cosby received an honorable discharge in 1960, and separated as a 3rd Class Petty Officer.
In recent weeks, it was announced that his planned project with NBC had been cancelled, followed by a press release that he would no longer be associated with his alma mater, The University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
“He no longer has any affiliation with the campaign nor does he serve in any other capacity for the university,” Blaguszewski told the Boston Globe, via Fox News.
Twenty women have come forward in recent weeks with allegations of sexual assault against Cosby.
On Tuesday, a woman named Judy Huth filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court alleging that the comedian assaulted her in 1974, when she was 15-years-old.
Cosby’s attorney, Martin Singer, has since fired back at the lawsuit, claiming that Huth’s lawyer is trying to extort the comedian.
Cosby has called Huth’s allegations “completely false.”
“Approximately 10 years ago, plaintiff Judith Huth unsuccessfully tried to get money from a tabloid by selling the same story about Bill Cosby that is the subject of this lawsuit. Knowing that since she disclosed her allegations to a media outlet 10 years ago, she cannot claim to have a repressed memory,” said Singer, via the Wrap.
Cosby continues to deny all allegations against him.
