On Sunday, singer Kanye West decided to premiere his new music video, New Slaves, at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. Park Police and Alamo security prevented the showing from moving forward, but hundreds of disappointed fans showed up. “They’re trying to show his video, his brand new video for New Slaves,” said one Kanye fan. “They tried to, but it didn’t work out.”
There were counterprotesters, too, who showed up to try to stop the showing. They bore American flags and said that the use of the Alamo was inappropriate, especially considering the hundreds of Texas and Mexican soldiers who perished at the Alamo.
Lyrics to the song include lines such as, “My momma was raised in an era when/Clean water was only served to the fairer skin/Doing clothes you would have thought I had help/But they wasn’t satisfied unless I picked the cotton myself.”
This is hardly the first publicity stunt gone awry for New Slaves. West has attempted to show it at multiple public locations, and has been shut down each time.
