Tallahassee Democrat Calls For Handgun Ban, Repeal of 2nd Amendment

On November 22 the Tallahassee Democrat called for the repeal of the Second Amendment and a total ban on handguns and “assault rifles.”

For those who respond by saying that taking guns from law-abiding citizens will only leave them in the hands of criminals the Democrat says, “That’s a chance worth taking.”

The anti-Second Amendment piece was written by Democrat columnist Gerald Ensley, who argues that attacks like the one at FSU on November 20 prove the need for repealing the Second Amendment and banning certain categories of guns. 

Ensley wrote: 

I’m not talking about gun control. I’m not talking about waiting periods and background checks. I’m talking about flat-out banning the possession of handguns and assault rifles by individual citizens. I’m talking about repealing or amendment the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. 

What Ensley does not take into account is that the carry of handguns was banned on the FSU campus–thanks in large part of FSU president John Thrasher’s opposition to students being able to use them for self-defense–and what did that handgun ban accomplish? It simply guaranteed that the bad guy, 31-year-old Myron May, was the only person who had a gun when he decided to attack. 

But this is a price the Tallahassee Democrat must be willing to pay, or so the column suggests:

Gun freaks say if you take away their guns only outlaws will have guns. That’s a chance worth taking. Because if we ban guns, eventually the tide will turn. It might take 10 or 20 years. Hell, it might take 50 years. But if we make it illegal to own a handgun, eventually there will be no handguns.

These claims are an affront to the lives of single mothers whose only means of self-defense may be the .38 Special revolver or the 9mm Glock pistol they’ve acquired to keep her family safe at night. To tell such a mother that she might have to lock her doors at night without a gun while criminals continue to have guns for 10, 20, or 50 years is simply ludicrous. 

And claims that gun bans are a solution run completely counter to history–including recent history. 

For example, Britain virtually banned all handguns in the 1990s, and this was on top of other stringent gun controls already in place. The result? Britain is now the “most violent country in Europe.”

The Second Amendment protects a right that our Creator gave us, not a right that government provides. Self-defense is integral to our humanity, and guns are integral to self-defense. Criminal misuse of firearms does not change that.
