Dem Rep: Fort Hood Proved Good Guys With Guns Don't Stop Bad Guys With Guns

During an October 27 Congressional debate Representative Tim Bishop (D-NY-01) said his Republican challenger Lee Zeldin’s position that more good guys with guns will stop bad guys with guns was proven wrong at Fort Hood, where Bishop says “there were an awful lot of really, really good guys with guns” yet attacks still occurred.

In saying this, Bishop either ignores or shows he does not know that those “really, really good guys” at Fort Hood were not allowed to carry their guns for self-defense. Apart from the MPs scattered about, the victims of Nidal Hasan (2009) and Ivan Lopez (2014) were sitting ducks who actually demonstrated the heinous acts that occur when only the bad guys have guns.

Here are Bishops’ exact words, spoken during the debate as a response to Zeldin’s pro-Second Amendment stance: “[Zeldin says] that the answer to gun violence in this country is to have more good guys with guns than bad guys with guns. That is an outrageously irresponsible statement.”

Bishop then began his Fort Hood reference by saying, “Let me refer you to the tragedy at Fort Hood. There were an awful lot of really, really good guys with guns at Fort Hood.” But his speech tapered off and the moderator stepped in as the crowd began booing.
