Following the June 10 murder/suicide at Oregon’s Reynolds High School, Micheal Bloomberg’s gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety said there have been “74 school shootings” since the heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary in December 2012.
They arrived at 74 by including stabbings and incidents without injuries or fatalities.
CNN broke down the “74 school shootings” Bloomberg’s group cites during the last 18 months, and here are some examples:
January 9, 2014: Liberty Technology magnet school in Jackson, Tennessee. A 16-year-old student shot a classmate in the leg as classes were being dismissed. The student was treated for his gun shot wound.
August 20, 2013: A man with an AK-47 entered Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, Georgia. He fired shots at the floor in the office and went “outside to fire at approaching police.” He then surrendered, and “no one inside or outside the school” was even injured.
Bloomberg’s group also includes the three people Elliot Rodger stabbed to death in Santa Barbara. These were stabbings–not “shootings”–which happened in an apartment, yet they make the list of “74 school shootings.”
Other incidents that made Everytown’s list were allegedly gang or drug related.
All of the real shooting incidents are horrible ordeals, but to list incidents in which no one was injured or in which the injuries were non-life threatening right beside “school shootings” like Sandy Hook Elementary seems disingenuous at best.
