Following his visit with Pope Francis at the Vatican last week, President Obama has given a rosary that was blessed by the pontiff to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
On Tuesday, Pelosi discussed Obama’s gift to her with reporters after a luncheon with the president at the White House.
As the Washington Times reports, Pelosi said, “I was happy to receive a rosary blessed by Pope Francis. It means a great deal to me.”
Though Pelosi claims to be Catholic, she is an avid supporter of abortion and same-sex marriage, both of which conflict with the teachings of the Church.
At a gala Planned Parenthood event on March 27th, Pelosi accepted the Margaret Sanger Award, named for the famous eugenicist, for her work defending abortion rights. As Politico reported, Pelosi rebuked the pro-life community and criticized “personhood” laws, stating that the struggle for reproductive rights will continue whatever the Supreme Court decides on the HHS mandate.
Speaking about pro-life individuals, Pelosi said, “…When you see how closed their minds are or oblivious or whatever it is – dumb – then you know what the fight is about.”
Last year, Cardinal Raymond Burke, chief justice of the Vatican’s highest court, said that Pelosi should not receive communion.
“Certainly this is a case when Canon 915 must be applied,” Burke explained. “This is a person who obstinately, after repeated admonitions, persists in a grave sin – cooperating with the crime of procured abortion – and still professes to be a devout Catholic.”
Burke added that Pelosi is an example of a Catholic who separates her faith from day-to-day living.
“This is a prime example,” said the cardinal, “of what Blessed John Paul II referred to as the situation of Catholics who have divorced their faith from their public life and therefore are not serving their brothers and sisters in the way that they must – in safeguarding and promoting the life of the innocent and defenseless unborn, in safeguarding and promoting the integrity of marriage and the family.”
