Virginia Beach Middle School sixth-grader Adrionna Harris “has been suspended for taking a razor from a student who was cutting himself.”
Her suspension is 10 days in length and carries a recommendation for expulsion.
According to UPI, after taking the razor Harris threw it away then tried to talk to the boy about why he shouldn’t be hurting himself. Harris said: “I took the razor blade, and I threw it away immediately… I didn’t carry it around the school… I didn’t use it against anyone… I threw it away.”
Under pressure from the public, Virginia Beach City Public Schools have agreed to hold a hearing on Harris’s suspension, which could result in shortening it or ending it.
Harris’s mother said she was “shocked and surprised” to hear of the suspension to begin with. She said: “I was shocked that a student would get suspended for helping another child.”
