Huma Abedin Stands by Her Man

Huma Abedin is still standing by her husband despite the revelation of Anthony Weiner’s continued sex escapades via social media; she not only appeared next to him at his press conference, but she actually spoke to the media on his behalf. 

The question is: why does a scorned woman stand by her man?

Weiner is running for the Democrat nomination for the mayor of New York City. He resigned from Congress in June 2011 after our own Andrew Breitbart exposed his lewd photos sent to young women via Twitter. Voters will decide the Democrat candidate in seven weeks.

Abedin is not like other scorned wives. She is very close to the Clinton family and was Hillary Clinton’s top adviser when she was Secretary of State. Rumor has it the Democrat nomination for president is all Hillary’s in 2016; this could help Abedin if she has political ambitions of her own.

Wendy Schiller, a political science professor at Brown University, talked to FOX News about Abedin’s role:

“Unlike Silda [Spitzer’s wife], Huma is a political person with her own ambitions. Hillary in 2016 may be a big part of this,” Schiller said. “If Weiner rehabilitates his image, even if he doesn’t win, it helps Huma, too.”

Weiner is not struggling to win the female vote in New York City. His main competition is City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. He has 21% of the female vote while she has 23%. At the press conference to discuss the latest revelations about his misconduct, one reporter asked Weiner why anyone should trust his judgment at this point. 

It turns out that experts think spouses can help out a troubled candidate’s image:

“Both of them have strong and very competent, capable wives, so it’s certainly possible women would say, ‘Why not?’ These strong, sensible, competent women are standing by their guys, so why not” vote for them? said Maurice Carroll, polling director for Quinnipiac University.

Curtis Gans, director of the Washington, DC-based Center for the Study of the American Electorate, said the numbers clearly show that many women were influenced by Silda Spitzer and Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, who stood by their men despite their embarrassing sexcapades.

“Since both candidates’ wives are supporting them, why should other women be offended? It’s water over the dam,” Gans said.

Political consultant Hank Sheinkopf agreed. “Having one’s wife stand next to you during the scandal and the recovery from the scandal tells other people you’re not as bad as people think you are,” he said.

In the end, it not only helps Weiner, but it helps Abedin. She is putting herself out there and making a name for herself. It could all be worth it if Clinton receives the 2016 Democrat presidential nomination.
