A public service ad created and distributed by First 5 California, a government campaign dedicated to “educate parents and caregivers about the important role they play in their children’s first years,” features a photoshopped African-American child. The child is photoshopped to look overweight so as to raise awareness of obesity among children.
The original picture of the child has her drinking milk from a carton using a straw. The photoshopped version has her drinking sugar from a packet using the same straw, her cheeks bloated, her hands chubby. “They are taking a perfectly healthy little girl and Photoshopping her to make her look unhealthily obese,” said Adweek media reporter Emma Bazilian to ABC News.
First 5 says that it stands by the campaign, ironically commenting, “The campaign serves to educate parents … on the realities and dangers of childhood obesity and get them to change their behaviors.”
According to the First 5 budget report for 2011-2012, the agency was granted $93.4 million.
