Chicago experienced more waves of violence on Saturday night and Sunday morning as one person was killed and six more were wounded by gunfire in the city with perhaps the nation’s most draconian gun-control laws.
The Chicago Tribune reported that the man who was killed was shot in a parking lot.
Chicago has been plagued this year by indiscriminate shootings, which have become more rampant on the weekends.
Here is the rap sheet the Tribune compiled:
• An SUV pulled alongside another vehicle and someone inside the SUV opened fire, striking a 16-year-old boy in the other vehicle, News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said. The shooting happened about 3 a.m. just north of 40th Street on Western Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said. The boy was shot in the thigh and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
• A woman and a girl were driven to St. Bernard Hospital and Healthcare Center by a friend after they were shot about 2:15 a.m. while trying to leave a parking lot in Englewood. The three were pulling away from a parking space in the 5800 block of South Wood Street when a group of males outside started arguing and someone opened fire, Alfaro said. A 16-year-old girl was shot in the upper lip and a 23-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to the abdomen, Alfaro said.
• About 1:20 a.m. in the 1300 block of West 78th Street in the Greshman neighborhood on the South Side, a 20-year-old man standing on a sidewalk heard shots and felt pain. Someone shot him. He was hit in the left buttocks and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition had stabilized, Alfaro said.
• A 22-year-old woman standing outside of a garage at a party in the Belmont Central neighborhood was shot in the foot about 12:45 a.m. Two males approached the party, in the 2800 block of North McVicker Avenue, and fought with another male. One of them opened fire while walking away, hitting the woman in the foot, Alfaro said. She was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where her condition had stabilized, Alfaro said.
• A 23-year-old man drove himself to the hospital after getting shot in the neck near Harrison and Cicero avenues Saturday night, police said. He was in the 600 block of South Cicero Avenue when someone opened fire about 7:35 p.m., News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said. The man drove himself from the West Garfield Park neighborhood to West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park where his condition has stabilized, police said.
