An Associated Press article titled, “Obama Promotes Modest American Dream” , highlights Obama’s grim view of the American dream from comments he made in his January 25th speech to Conveyor Engineering & Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The President remarked that…
“If you’re willing to put in the work, the idea is that you should be able to raise a family and own a home; not go bankrupt because you got sick, because you’ve got some health insurance that helps you deal with those difficult times; that you can send your kids to college; that you can put some money away for retirement, that’s all most people want. Folks don’t have unrealistic ambitions. They do believe that if they work hard they should be able to achieve that small measure of an American Dream.”
When I first heard this comment I thought it was so sad. Then, as the anger crept in, I thought, does President Obama not understand where he lives?
“Unrealistic” thinking is the very principle this country was founded on. Our founding fathers decided this whole “taxation without representation” thing, wasn’t working for them. What did they decide to do? They decided to become traitors against the King of England and found an entirely new Republic based on the principles of freedom; not to mention, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That’s pretty unrealistic.
Americans from that day forward have carried the torch. Edison said, it’s dark. I’m going to change that. Ford said, there is a better way to travel and the Model T was born. Orville and Wilbur Wright said I think we should fly, and they did. Rosa Parks said, I’m going to sit in the front of the bus. She did it and for her time it was unfathomable.
We were first on the moon. We have personal computers in practically every home. And, do you own an iPhone? I’m amazed constantly the effect a man by the name of Steve Jobs has on my every day personal life. I would marry my iPhone if I could.
Thank you God these Americans chose to think in the most unrealistic manner possible.
In addition, Obama should never question American resolve. That little thing called the light bulb, that Thomas Alva Edison created, took him thousands of tries. When should he have given up and just accepted his fate Mr. Obama? After 200 tries? A thousand tries? No, he’s an American, and he worked until he achieved his vision.
How about a man named Walt Disney? It’s rumored that he went to over 300 banks to secure the funding for this little idea called a “theme park.” Today, almost 50 million people from around the word travel to Walt Disney World alone. And for what? Just because an American had the vision, resolve and he wanted to make people happy. You can’t get any more American than that.
Why can’t I have all the dreams I set out to achieve? Why can’t I vacation in Aspen or 16 other places in three years? The truth is, I can. It’s up to me. I have the freedom to chose a better life for myself. Then I can work as hard and as long as I need to in order to bring my dreams to fruition. If I were a woman living in Iran, that wouldn’t be possible. If I lived in Saudi Arabia, I wouldn’t even be allowed to operate a car.
This is the most innovative, amazing country on the planet. We are given every possibility as far as our minds can stretch. We’re Americans and unrealistic thinking is what we do best. But most importantly, shouldn’t the person who leads this great nation actually believe that too?
