As Donald Trump continues to rise in Republican presidential primary polls, The Huffington Post announced today that it will suddenly cease coverage of Trump’s campaign as part of its politics coverage.
The news comes as a new slew of national polls places Trump at the top of the Republican field, threatening traditional Democratic and Republican interests who hope to keep issues like immigration off the national radar screen.
The Huffington Post writes, “After watching and listening to Donald Trump since he announced his candidacy for president, we have decided we won’t report on Trump’s campaign as part of The Huffington Post’s political coverage. Instead, we will cover his campaign as part of our Entertainment section. Our reason is simple: Trump’s campaign is a sideshow. We won’t take the bait.”
Trump quickly fired back in a statement calling The Huffington Post a “clown show”.
Mr. Trump has never been a fan of Arianna Huffington or the money-losing Huffington Post. The only clown show in this scenario is the Huffington Post pretending to be a legitimate news source. Mr. Trump is not focused on being covered by a glorified blog. He is focused on Making America Great Again.
Trump highlighted that his favorability amongst Republican voters continues to rise as he has addressed topics the rest of the field — and most of the media — refuse to cover, such as open door trade and immigration policies:
Mr. Trump is number one in the unimportant Huffington Post poll, along with all other recently released polls including Reuters, FOX, USA Today/Suffolk University and The Economist.
Mr. Trump singlehandedly raised the issue of illegal immigration and started a national conversation about what has turned out to be one of the most important topics of this election cycle. Likewise, Mr. Trump is the leader on issues such as the terrible United States trade deals, strengthening our military, taking care of our great Vets and the repeal and replacement of Obamacare.
A new Fox News poll out today shows that 70% of Republican voters agree with Trump on immigration.
Meanwhile, a recent YouGov poll shows conservative voters are perhaps the group in the country most skeptical of so-called free trade deals that expand low-cost foreign imports.
The panic at HuffPo is perhaps not surprising: as conservative icons like Phyllis Schlafly and Ann Coulter have documented, Ted Kennedy’s plan for open immigration has been the key to the bluing of the electoral map. At the same time, polling from Kellyanne Conway shows the Republican party’s best bet at winning votes from working class Americans of all extractions — white, black, hispanic — is to pledge to defend their jobs from new waves of foreign workers.
One can imagine nothing would make the HuffPo happier than for the GOP’s general election nominee to be a donor class Republican who shares the Left’s affinity for globalism.
